Taking the bike by the handle bars

Following delays due to work, rain and typhoons, we finally took the bull by the horns Tuesday, or rather the bike by the handle bars, and set off for a Danshui round trip, a ride of about 70km if you go along the Keelung and Danshui rivers. It took us five hours including rest, breaks, lunch and coffee out in Danshui.

We started out in the river park along the Keelung River, which we crossed on MacArthur Bridge 1 (麥帥一橋). Then just follow the river until it joins the Danshui River and then continue till you hit Danshui. Flat and well paved road the whole way.

If it turns out to be too far and if you do it on a holiday, you can put the bike on the MRT when it is time to return to Taipei. You cannot do it in Danshui, but in the station before Danshui and on several other stations along the Danshui-Xindian line.

Danshui coffee shop

In Danshui, there are several nice and cozy restaurants and coffee shops along the river where you can take a break. At the end of the river walk lies Taipei's best located Starbuck's with a nice view of the river

Facts Cross the Keelung River on MacArthur Bridge 1 and then follow the Keelung and Danshui rivers to Danshui. Thirty-five km of flat, paved road to Danshui. If that's too far, you can take the bike on the MRT on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays between 6am and 4pm and between 7pm and closing, either to Hongshulin before Danshui and bike back, or biking there and taking the MRT back.
